Welcome to Backyard Genie™!

I’m Ramona Werst, your Backyard Genie™.  Some of you may know me from my Basil Blog:  Ramona’s Basil Garden where I am having so much fun teaching you to “Love Your Basil“.

Learn more about me

For those of you who do not know me, you can learn lots more about me and my fantastic journey from  by clicking on the link here:  From Saigon to Texas.

Due to my medical needs, we had to sell our Sherwood Ranch and move closer to the doctors in San Antonio.  I feel this was a dream come true.  Let me explain…even though our home in Sherwood, TX  near San Angelo was a paradise, we had  limited gardening.  it was shaded with 100 year old Pecan trees and there was not enough direct sunlight for a really good garden.  However, I was able to grow my Basils and at one time I had over 60 different varieties growing.  But we needed to move closer to San Antonio to be closer so the docs can keep a closer eye on me.

Both David and I are retired and really have thought about what we wanted to do ‘when we grew up’.  We both said at the same time, Garden, Cook (me cook, David eat! lol), write on our blogs, and find products to sell on line so we could work from home.  Oh, and David wants to play golf . He has a really good friend who lives nearby who is a fantastic golfer and while David is gone playing golf, I usually surprise him with something special from my kitchen.  We decided to look for a place with some extra land so we could expand with gardens, a large greenhouse, a swimming pool and plenty of room for my chickens, bobcat, and soon my mini-donkeys.  And….I’m still planting the seed with David for an Alpaca or two….shhhhhh….

We found the perfect place!  3 acres, beautiful home (except the kitchen was way too small), and lots of sunshine!  We started with building the pens for Bobby the Bobcat and the chickens.  Next we built the pool and started the remodeling of the kitchen.

The kitchen is going to be a longer project.  The plan is for the construction company to complete the shell and then for us (really David) to do all the finishing touches.  My kitchen is going to be a masterpiece in the making….with one side of cabinets and counterspace of 18′!  A 8′ island in the center, and a 29′ pantry!

Now for the purpose of this blog….we have plenty of sunshine and this means Gardening!

As your Backyard Genie™, I am going to share with you creative ideas for enjoying a decorative and edible backyard.  I’ll be showing you how to have a garden, and also to garden in container pots around your patio.  You don’t have to have tons of space, in fact you can also enjoy gardening on a small balcony patio!

My alter ego, The Backyard Genie™ will show you how to start your plants from seed, secrets that your plants will love and will make them grow beautiful and strong, how to harvest and store your produce, and some recipes that I have created that my family enjoys.

The Backyard Genie™ will also have Gardening Supplies and Tools that you will want to purchase for either yourself or as gifts for your gardening friends.

You’ll really want to sign up for updates so you won’t miss any tips…it’s free and easy.  We will notify you by email whenever we add anything new to the website.

So let’s get started on our new adventure and let the Backyard Genie™ show you how to have ‘Farm Fresh Produce from Your Own Backyard‘.
