Covering the Hoops for our Fall Tomato Garden with Plastic

Plastic covering hoops protects our Fall Tomatoes…

We added the hoops over our tomatoes to frame in our garden.

Plastic Covering TomatoesThere are days that are sunny and warm and the nights are getting cooler.  Adding a plastic cover over the hoops using a easy technique, allows us to cover and remove the plastic easily.

Lay the plastic (6mil plastic, UV treated, 10′ x 20′ roll) over the hoops.  Make sure it hangs over the garden frame so when we tac it to a 1″ x 2″ board that will be tacked permanently to the frame on one side and on the other side tac to a board that we will leave hang.  Make sure it will enclose the tomatoes completely and not allow the cold air to flow through the created greenhouse.

We had an old broom handle that we cut in half and taped with ductape to both ends of the 1″ x 2″ board to make handles that would be easy to turn the plastic to roll up.

Make sure that there is enough plastic on both the ends to fold together with some extra plastic to be able to use clips to close snuggly.

Rolled up PlasticOn the warmer sunny days, you can roll up the plastic turning the handles and over the hoops and down the other side, laying the plastic that is rolled up on the ground.

Then before the cooler night comes, all you have to do is unroll the plastic over the hoops again and let the loose board hang.

It will be heavy enough not to blow up if it’s windy.

Here’s the video to show you how we did it…

Next we’ll talk about when it gets cold but the tomatoes need a little more time on the plants.
